• Ubuntu 12.04.1 Radeon 9550 stuck with 640x480, works in Geexbox

  I am a complete new user trying to set up Ubuntu on an old desktop. It has an AGP Radeon 9550 graphics card. I am running Ubuntu from a USB drive with persistence as the PC currently has no hard drive I seem to be stuck in 640*480 mode. The desktop itself is larger, but the monitor display is stuck on 640*480. In SettingsDisplays, only the 640*480 option is available. What I have found out so far: The proprietary ati drivers no longer support my card. If 3D isn't an issue (it's not) the open source driver should be fine. This should be installed by default so in theory I am using it already xserver-xconf/pci/*.ids doesn't show any entries for the card's PCI id. hardware additional drivers show no proprietary drivers I tried the booting into the current version of Geexbox from a USB stick and this set the resolution correctly by default so I know it can be done, but I know no idea how. How can I tell what driver the card is using, and how can I get the higher resolutions back?

• Why does Ubuntu's Nautilus display a folder called "Examples" while the console displays "examples.desktop"

  These folders occur at /home/username. How does this name discrepancy arise? (Uppercase E versus lowercase e.) It seems to be a shortcut to /usr/share/example-content. How can I delete /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase without using the command line? One possible answer is to make a privileged Nautilus using something like these SUSE instructions (link below). Unfortunately "gnomesu nautilus" gives me a "gnomesu: no such file" message and "sudo nautilus" does not do anything when added to the properties of the Launcher. • configuring two network interfaces in ubuntu 10.04.1

  I have got two NICs configured on a VM - each is tied to a specific network, one is a DMZ, the other is an internal network. I want MySQL to listen on the internal network only and Apache on the DMZ listening for HTTP and HTTPS. But as soon as I add the second interface I run into trouble. I can hit HTTP on either interface, but can not hit 3306 on the internal network for MySQL. • autocomplete not working on one sever, works on others

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and x86 running on various servers and auto complete works on all of them bar one. The issue: apt-<tab> would show a list of options but sudo apt-<tab> would not. After fiddling with it for a few hours i've found that /etc/bash_autocomplete did not exist. on the broken server. Copying the one from a working one it now works. but still not properly. sudo apt-get ins<tab> does not show do anything. listing the files in /etc/bash_autocomplete.d/ on the working server has about 50 files, and the broken one only two or three. i dont think that i can just copy these files though as it might show commands for things that are not even installed. TL;DR autocomplete broken, how can i fix it. Seems like its disabled somewhere, why is this EDIT: Ok, it was not ever installed... $ sudo apt-get install bash-completion Reading package lists... • Install Ubuntu 10.10 from loopback mounted ISO image

  I have a laptop with a faulty BIOS that has stopped booting from CDs even though it supports it (and it doesn't support booting from USB drives). I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on it. I already had 9.10 installed. I tried using Kexec, but it refused to accept the kernel image. Eventually I found this page which shows how to make GRUB 2 boot from an ISO file. That worked fine, and I am now running the live image from the file. (If I can get this to work, it will be my new preferred way of installing Ubuntu, as it saves CDs and boots much faster.) However, I can't install it. The installer won't make changes to the hard drive, because the partition containing the ISO is mounted (and can't be unmounted because it is in use). Even if I only choose to use other partitions that are not mounted, the installer refuses to go any farther. Clearly, it should be possible using other partitions on the same disk. Is there any way to work around this issue or force the installer to go ahead?

  I have been stuck on a netbook since last year due to budget constraints, but finally managed to get a decent laptop from a very generous person. Now my ubuntu installation in the netbook has all my development tools, libraries, personal mediawiki, other servers and things that I'm only reminded when the command line complains. I can always ssh into my netbook, but don't want to carry both the computers all the time. Is it possible to create an image from my netbook Ubuntu and use it out of the box in a Vmware player in the new laptop?

So I want to install 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on my system on another partition(So that I can have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions). Is it okay to install both 32 bit and 64 bit. • read data on ntfs partition - ubuntu

  Hi, I had a win xp with an NTFS partion for programs (c:) and I installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. I will use ubuntu from now on. On the disk there was a space for the NTFS partition and free space. I created in the free space a new linux partition. So the new linux partition is a ext3. now from ubuntu I used the disk utility and saw that the windows is marked as free space. I had only one possibility, which is to create a partition, so I did as NTFS. I did NOT format it. I don't care about the windows system, I just need to access the program files folder on that partition and get my chrome bookmarks. I forgot to save them before the installation of linux. do you think it is possible? if so how? thanks.

• No sound output from headphone jack Ubuntu12.04

  I have just bought a new ASUS u47vc computer. I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on it alongside windows 7 with no problems what so ever. Howevr, there is one issue that must be resolved. I can not get sound to come from the audio jack. The laptop's speakers work fine. It plays music and sound files fine with the internal speaks. However, when I plug in my headphones (or external speakers) the internal speakers mute (as they should) and nothing comes out of the headphones. • How can I prevent OpenVPN from clobbering local route?

  I have a local network on 192.168.1.0 with netmask 255.255.255.0. When I connect to a VPN though OpenVPN (as a client), it pushes a route for 192.168.1.0 that clobbers the existing one, making my local network inaccessible. I don't to access anything on 192.168.1.0 on the remote machine; I'd like to just ignore it, while accepting the other routes that are pushed. My client is Ubuntu 10.10. How can I skip the one offending route?

During the upgrade, grub installation screen appeared and asked me which partition I wanted to install grub. Options are sda,sdb,md1 and md2. I decide to install them on both sda and sdb partitions. I wondering, was I make true decision? If machine get reboot is it can be boot up safely? • Ubuntu 13.10 on Acer V5-472 with HD 4000

  I have an Acer V5-472 with intel HD4000 graphics chipset and a built-in 1366*768 display. I have installed ubuntu 13.10 amd64 in legacy boot mode with an external monitor. Installation showed no problems, I can boot from HDD and log into my system. The internal display doesn't work and I have to use an external monitor. I have tried the following (found in other threads) to no avail: Setting grub option "acpi_backlight=vendor" or "acpi_osi=Linux" or both. Installing the intel HD drivers for Linux from their homepage. Running in circles, screaming and shouting. The internal display lights up (I can change the brightness with Fn-Left and Fn-Right) but that's all. When I boot, I get a purple splash screen and from then only the external monitor works. I read somewhere that this might be a problem with kernel 3.11? Has anybody ubuntu running on an Acer V5-472? Should I change ubuntu version or use 32-bit instead? In general, how can I get the internal display to work? Edit: The settings-display dialogue shows the internal display correctly with supported resolution of 1366.

  for work I need to get a a new and cheap graphics card for a dual boot machine: windows xp/ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The only requirements I have are: it should work 'flawlessly' in ubuntu (proprietary drivers are ok) it should handle Guild Wars 2 & League of Legends in windows xp (this is really the top priority as we need to be able to play at work :) - yes I have a cool job) I know nothing about graphics cards (and it seems to be a jungle out there). From other questions here and some webstigation I think I'd like to go for a Nvidia card, I've been trying to figure out what models fit the system req's but it seems they use different kind of model numbers so I don't get any wiser. tl;dr: will http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-620-oem/specifications run Guild Wars 2 http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=938 Or what is the worst card from nVidia that will run GW2 smoothly and work well in Ubuntu 12.04 Thanks!

  We have 4 nodes Riak installation. They are running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise installed servers. We have installed 1.1.4 at August 1st 2012 and upgraded 1.2.0 when its available. Server names are: f1 - 10.10.0.12 - This is the first installed server. We have joined other ones to this server. This also serves Riak control. s2 - 10.10.0.22 - s3 - 10.10.0.23 - s4 - 10.10.0.24 - This server also serves Riak control. This morning we've seen "insufficient nodes available" error at our applications log and restarted all nodes. 3 of them became available except "f1" UPDATE : while I prepare this message live 3 nodes became unavailable and need restart Riak. wolfiem@f01:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/riak start Riak failed to start within 15 seconds, see the output of 'riak console' for more information. If you want to wait longer, set the environment variable WAIT_FOR_ERLANG to the number of seconds to wait.   I try to boot Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit on my Compaq CQ58 laptop from a USB but it is not working. I've correctly installed the Ubuntu on my pen drive following the instructions on Ubuntu website.   Step 1: I wanted to Add a menu as "Compress as ZIP" on right click. I know i can use change default compress format as "ZIP" using gconf-editor. But I wanted to add a new Menu Item for Compressing as ZIP without opening any other option dialog. Step 2: I wanted to Compress a file as ZIP and Rename it as a "epub". Please let me know is it possible to zip&rename by adding single menu Item? Im using Ubuntu 11.04 and Installed "Nautilus-Action-Configurations", but unsuccessful. N.B. I have read this Ask Ubuntu Q&A; I dont want to open a new window to choose me the format. It should be straight away saved as ZIP.

  I did the following: Install command line interface with ubuntu alternate install 12.04 in vmwareplayer5(9.2.2) After the base system was installed: sudo apt-get update, upgrade and dist-upgrade, sudo apt-get install xinit xorg fluxbox build-essential lxterminal gksu leafpad pcmanfm mc chromium-browser, this works. I also installed vmwaretools. My problem is being unable to mount any usb hdd or thumb drives. I'm new at building fluxbox so any help would be much appreciated!

• Dropbox won't connect on Ubuntu 10.10 (Waiting For Connection)

  I run Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-25) on an x86 machine and try to install Dropbox by downloading the latest .deb file from the website. Now, first it will install dropbox-nautilus (requiring me to restart Nautilus before that) and then ask me to start Dropbox itself. The Dropbox client opens and indefinitely waits for a connection as there is a connection error. Of course, I don't use a proxy server and I'm writing this post from this very machine, so there's no problem with the internet connection. I'm not using a firewall (at least not that I know of, the Ubuntu installation is relatively untouched so far). Does anybody have some pointers?
